10 Things You Can Do Now to Help Save the Environment
If you're concerned about the environment, global warming and the effects of climate change, then you'll want to know what you can do to help.
Here are 10 things you can do to help improve the planet.
1. Try and reduce the amount you waste. Whether it's food, packaging, shopping, or anything else, you'll want to make sure that what you buy is being used, and not being sent straight to landfill.
2. You can reduce electricity consumption by not watching TV or using the computer or games console as much. Why not read a book, or go for a walk, or play a board game with your family. It's bound to be more fun, and certainly better for you.
3. Instead of driving everywhere, try and take fewer journeys by car. You can walk short journeys or use public transport. Why not get a bike, and cycle to work? It's a good way to lose weight and get fit, and you'll be doing your bit for the environment too!
4. You can try to use less water, by remembering to turn off taps, and by having showers not baths. Do you really need to wash the car weekly, run the dishwasher, or use the pressure washer to clean the driveway, so often?
5. You might find that you don't have to have your home as hot in the winter if you wear more clothes. Rather than turning the heating up, why not put a jumper on, or do something more energetic like the cleaning or going for a walk to warm you up.
6. Don't forget to recycle as much as you can. Paper, cardboard, cans and glass bottles can be turned into new products, whilst your unwanted clothes and even furniture can find a new home, and make somebody else happy.
7. At work, try not to use as much paper. Do you really need to print out every email? Do you need to use sticky notes for everything? Do you still need a paper diary? What about getting rid of the flipchart and getting a whiteboard instead, or seeing if you can use an old computer?
8. Electrical appliances on standby still use electricity. If you're not using it, why not turn it off? From TVs and games consoles, to phone chargers and laptops, whatever you're not using, it doesn't need to be plugged in or left on standby.
9. What about making more use of technology so that you don't need as much paper, or need to travel as far. Could you implement video conferencing at work, or email your friends and family rather than sending letters? What about looking at websites rather than picking up leaflets?
10. Encourage your friends to be more environmentally aware, and see what other ideas they can come up with.
